  • The guide will provide a safety briefing and explain the responsible-tourism principles applicable to the Krakatau area.

07:30–08:30 AM – Depart by Boat

  • Depart from the designated departure point and begin the journey across the Sunda Strait.
  • During the crossing, guests can enjoy views of the surrounding islands and marine environment. Depending on weather and sea conditions, marine wildlife such as flying fish, dolphins, or seabirds may occasionally be observed.

Scenic Cruise Toward the Krakatau Volcanic Complex

The boat will approach the Krakatau volcanic area only within the limits permitted by the latest official safety recommendations.

Guests will remain on board and observe Anak Krakatau from a safe distance.

There will be no unauthorized landing, hiking, climbing, or walking on Anak Krakatau.

The guide will explain the geological history of Krakatau, including the catastrophic 1883 eruption, the emergence and development of Anak Krakatau, and the continuing geological processes that shape the volcanic islands.

Volcano Viewing and Photography

This is an opportunity to photograph the volcanic landscape without entering restricted areas.

The boat will maintain the required safety distance from the active volcano. The exact route and viewing position may change depending on the latest volcanic activity, weather, sea conditions, and instructions from the relevant authorities.

Important: Access to the Krakatau Islands Nature Reserve is subject to applicable conservation regulations and permits. SIMAKSI (Surat Izin Masuk Kawasan Konservasi) must be obtained when required for activities entering the conservation area. The itinerary and route are also subject to the latest instructions from conservation authorities and volcanic safety recommendations.

Please do not request the boat captain or crew to approach the volcano beyond the permitted safety boundary for photography.

  • The importance of responsible tourism in protected areas.

No Landing on Anak Krakatau

Visitors are not permitted to land on, climb, hike, or conduct recreational activities on Anak Krakatau unless such activity is specifically authorized by the competent authorities and is consistent with the latest volcanic safety recommendations.

The standard tourism itinerary therefore does not include landing on Anak Krakatau.

This policy is intended to protect both visitors and the fragile volcanic environment.

Optional Marine Activity at an Authorized Location

If sea conditions, conservation regulations, and the approved itinerary permit, the trip may continue to an authorized marine recreation site outside restricted volcanic areas.

Swimming or snorkeling will only be conducted at locations where the activity is legally permitted and considered safe by the relevant authorities.

The guide and boat crew have the right to cancel or change this activity when weather, sea conditions, conservation requirements, or government safety instructions make it inappropriate.

Lunch

Lunch will be served at an authorized location, either on board the boat or at another permitted destination according to the approved itinerary.

No lunch stop or recreational activity will be conducted on restricted areas of the Krakatau Nature Reserve.

02:00–03:00 PM – Return Journey

Begin the return journey toward the Banten coast.

Enjoy the scenery of the Sunda Strait and the Krakatau volcanic complex from the boat.

Afternoon – Arrive at the Coast

Arrive at the designated harbor or beach and continue by private vehicle to Jakarta or your requested destination.

End of Tour

The tour ends upon arrival at the agreed drop-off location.

Important Conservation and Safety Regulations

Anak Krakatau is not an ordinary tourist attraction. It is an active volcanic island within the Krakatau Islands Nature Reserve.

Visitors must therefore respect all applicable conservation and safety regulations.

1. SIMAKSI and Conservation Authorization

Where the itinerary involves entry into a conservation area, the required SIMAKSI (Surat Izin Masuk Kawasan Konservasi) and other applicable permissions must be obtained through the authorized authority.

A commercial tour package or boat ticket does not automatically constitute permission to enter a protected conservation area.

2. No Unauthorized Landing

The standard tour does not include landing on Anak Krakatau.

Visitors must not disembark on the island unless the activity has been specifically authorized and is permitted under the latest regulations and volcanic safety recommendations.

3. No Hiking or Climbing

Hiking, climbing, walking around the volcanic slopes, or approaching the crater is not part of this tour.

The volcano must be observed from a safe and officially permitted distance.

4. Follow the Latest Volcanic Safety Recommendations

Volcanic conditions can change rapidly.

The route may therefore be changed, shortened, postponed, or cancelled when required by the latest information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), the Geological Agency, conservation authorities, maritime authorities, or other competent government institutions.

5. The Safety Boundary Has Priority

At the time of writing, the Geological Agency’s latest published recommendation places a 2-kilometre restricted activity radius from the center of Anak Krakatau’s volcanic activity under Level II (Waspada). Visitors and tourists are prohibited from entering and conducting activities within that radius.

This safety boundary takes priority over the advertised itinerary.

If the official safety radius is changed, the tour route will be adjusted accordingly.

6. Weather and Sea Conditions

The itinerary is subject to weather and sea conditions.

The captain and guide may modify the route when waves, wind, visibility, currents, or other maritime conditions create a safety risk.

7. Respect the Nature Reserve

Visitors must not:

  • Collect volcanic rocks, sand, plants, shells, or other natural materials;

  • Disturb wildlife;

  • Leave waste;

  • Damage vegetation;

  • Enter restricted areas;

  • Operate drones without the required authorization;

  • Conduct unauthorized research or sampling; or

  • Undertake any activity prohibited by conservation authorities.

A Different Way to Experience Anak Krakatau

The purpose of this trip is not to climb the volcano.

Instead, it offers an opportunity to observe and understand one of Indonesia’s most remarkable active volcanic landscapes from a responsible distance.

Seeing Anak Krakatau from the sea allows visitors to appreciate its geological history while respecting the fact that the island remains an active volcanic environment and a protected conservation area.

A responsible visitor understands that getting closer is not necessarily a better experience.

The best experience is one that allows us to appreciate the volcano without putting people, wildlife, or the protected environment at unnecessary risk.

Important Notice

This itinerary is subject to change without prior notice.

Volcanic activity, conservation regulations, weather, sea conditions, and government safety recommendations may change at any time.

The latest instructions issued by the competent Indonesian authorities always take precedence over this itinerary.

Do not attempt to land on or approach restricted areas of Anak Krakatau.

Before departure, guests should confirm the latest volcanic activity status, access restrictions, conservation requirements, and applicable permits with the tour operator and relevant authorities.

Safety, conservation, and compliance with government regulations always come before the tour itinerary.

World Heritage Natural Wonder

Rising from the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, Krakatau is one of Indonesia’s most remarkable volcanic landscapes and a place of extraordinary geological significance.

Krakatau forms part of Ujung Kulon National Park, which has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 1991. The UNESCO-listed property includes the Krakatau Nature Reserve, together with the Ujung Kulon Peninsula and several surrounding islands.

The importance of Krakatau goes far beyond its dramatic scenery. The catastrophic 1883 eruption became one of the most extensively studied volcanic eruptions in modern history.

In the years that followed, the Krakatau islands became a remarkable natural laboratory, allowing scientists to observe how vegetation and wildlife gradually returned to an environment dramatically transformed by volcanic activity. UNESCO recognizes this continuing geological and ecological evolution as part of the site’s Outstanding Universal Value.

UNESCO identifies Krakatau as one of the world’s best-known examples of **recent island volcanism**. Its combination of volcanic formations, surrounding ocean, evolving vegetation and spectacular coastal scenery creates a landscape of exceptional natural beauty.

Today, a journey to Krakatau offers more than an adventure to a famous volcano. It is an opportunity to experience a living landscape shaped by powerful geological forces and to witness a place that has played an important role in the scientific understanding of volcanic islands and ecological succession.
