Authority of Ujung Kulon National Park have taken a firm step to protect the critically endangered Javan rhinoceros by installing fences along the rivers surrounding Ujung Kulon Peninsula.
These barriers were put in place after officials discovered that poachers had been sneaking into the protected area through river mouths, often disguising themselves as local residents engaged in activities like fishing, honey harvesting, or religious visits.
Made from the sturdy trunks of Langkap plants, which are both durable and abundant in the park, the fences are designed to prevent unauthorized boat access while ensuring that the movement of wildlife remains unhindered.
Despite these new security measures, local fishermen will still be allowed to take shelter along the park’s beaches and river mouths during extreme weather conditions, as the fences have been carefully placed to avoid disrupting their activities.
