Handeuleum Island and Kutakarang have been temporarily closed to tourism activities. The closure was officially announced by the Ujung Kulon National Park Authority (BTNUK).

According to the head of Ujung Kulon National Park, Ardi Andono, the temporary closure takes effect immediately.

“Both Handeuleum Island and Kutakarang are closed starting today, Thursday, October 30, 2025,” he stated in an interview with journalists.

Closure Supports Javan Rhino Translocation Program

The decision to close these two sites is part of efforts to support the Javan Rhino translocation program — a critical conservation activity aimed at protecting and expanding the population of one of the world’s rarest large mammals.

Handeuleum Island and Kutakarang are frequently visited by both domestic and international tourists,” Ardi explained.
“However, these areas are included in Ring 2 of the designated zone for the Javan Rhino translocation project.”

Tourism Access Temporarily Restricted

As part of this conservation initiative, the national park authority will temporarily restrict visitor access to these two areas.

“Starting from October 30, 2025, Handeuleum Island and Kutakarang will remain closed to tourists until further notice,” Ardi added.

Announcement Letter

This temporary restriction is based on Announcement Letter No: 327/ /T.12/TU-2/KSA.04.01/B/10/2025 issued by the Ujung Kulon National Park Office on October 29, 2025.

Despite the temporary closure of Handeuleum Island and Kutakarang, other parts of Ujung Kulon National Park remain open for visitors. Tourists are encouraged to explore alternative destinations such as Peucang Island, Panaitan Island, and the Gunung Honje area, which offer beautiful beaches, coral reefs, and wildlife observation experiences.
